Eye opening

“Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open.”
– BKS Iyengar

Attended Leslie Howard’s workshop at last ! A senior veteran teacher, again another highly endorsed teacher from my Yoga Therapy Program’s director. The studio was packed with women of all ages but especially recent postpartum moms … and some appeared to be Yoga/Pilates teachers or a PT, simply there to learn to better help others. Did you know one out of three women throughout different life stages in their lives suffer from issues related to our Apana – “down-there” region? Leslie suspects the actual rate to be as high as 50% because that 1/3 data comes from what’s been reported. She believes so many cases tend to remain unreported as women (& men too!) quietly do so well what they quietly do, i.e.,  …suffer.  Many of us are well trained in the art of … enduring. We endure … Why endure? Fix it.

Went over the anatomy …to much greater detail.  Rather amazed at the depth of expertise she has on this matter.  Then onto self-diagnostic tools, yoga poses specific to what we are trying to alleviate or strengthen and more.  Once again impressed by the therapeutic power of yoga when applied to ways to bring about comfort and ease in our lives. It does not mean that the practice is not challenging – it’s challenging – but effective and worthwhile. Isn’t feelings of liberation from discomforts worthwhile?

It’s pretty crazy that we know so little about ourselves. It’s like we are driving around this car we don’t know anything about the mechanics of … only we are much much more complex, we have this body, the mind and this energy … a spirit.  At one point with this “ah-ha” facial expressions, few of us exclaimed – how come no one taught us this!?  Really.  Why don’t we know this stuff? It’s so vital to our wellbeing.  Convinced from this workshop that knowledge  holds the key, the power in our self-care protocol. It’s empowering to find out how unique and independent we each are, and yet, paradoxically, how connected and communal we are meant to be.

She also provides referrals to PTs so she’s all about collaborative care.  Can’t wait to get my hands on her book due out soon:)

“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and
endure what cannot be cured.”

We need some College Humor to get through?

Urdhva Mukha Svanasana
*********************************
(OORD-vah MOO-kah shvon-AHS-anna)
urdhva = upward
mukha = face
svana = dog
asana = pose
*********************************
While I realize this may offend some people, thought to share this video from utube. If you could just lighten up in the midst of all this perceived confusion designed to create a sense of instability and turbulence. With all the rhetoric of divisiveness flying about, we have to question what is the truth? What is your own truth? What do you hold dear? If you can laugh about something, you can triumph over fear/hate to invite in more acceptance, tolerance, kindness and inclusions. Life’s after all about relationships, connections and love/service. At present, what words, things, thinking, belief system deter from what’s most important?

I realize January 30th is an anniversary of this great leader of non-violence …perishing at the hands of radical angry hater … but has Ghandi’s ideas and call for non-violence perish with him? I don’t think so in spite of all the violent outbreaks around the world. When one can use sense of humor, we can overcome the ridiculousness of all at times. Even at the very micro-level around us – why do we quarrel and fight over … sometimes such petty things in the scheme of things? From darkness to light … when you can roll your eyes and laugh even if it’s not politically correct.

Let’s lighten up. Not making light of the serious issues of the day and there are plenty … but let us lighten up – That intention alone will free you from fear. Don’t let fear grip you – laugh in its face and move, act and …help.

Offsetting the negative emotions with some positive ones – to find that balance at all times.
Giving ourselves permission to be light-hearted.
It’s okay.

Then maybe some spin class after that yoga class:) It’s good exercise !

Just blend and mix that fitness cocktail, inviting that feeling of lightness and ease amidst the challenge. It feels good.

Back to deepening the practice

Reviewing, observing, BEING … DOING:)
sm_IMG_0557I really don’t like being touched in yoga class too much – feel the tension coming on – so this is nice:)sm_IMG_0561Adjustments or focus gathering… not correction. Prom_IMG_6867sm_IMG_0735sm_IMG_1507Prom_IMG_6848

How did nearly 10 lbs creep up last year? Ironically by spending too much time on yoga therapy related studies which meant – hours of watching anatomy videos (homework) and reading about mind-body-&more connections (homework & more reading assignments), being stressed about getting that HW done when you are short on time, doing more homework, holding space rather than “doing”. Back to the Being of Doing. While I can’t practice as much as those good old days when I had more time (well nourished on 4-5 times a week practice peppered with weekend intensives …a fading memory to regain). One just has to dedicate a “me”-time when there’s no time. Like all of us with responsibilities – Yes, make time. Feels GOOD! Banish stiffness, find space in the constricted tightness, find freedom. Flow. Off to the gym or to a studio, or merely to space out the 10,000 steps a day – Have a great day !

New Year’s Resolution?
2 lbs a month weight loss in 5 months equals 10 lbs by June – without counting calories; engaging in yin yoga (because mindful resistance, strengthening (muscles are engaged then released), and stretching can help with the athletics) peppered with those interval training – yang activities.

Invite Diaphragmatic breathing, take it further and engage the Ujai breath, the victorious breath where there’s a little bit of resistance in the slow exhale … just with that alone, 3 lbs loss in one week already. Really powerful. Just eating plant based whole foods flavored with lemon, lime, Ayurvedic(learned from Jyoti) spices, miso, soy sauce, yuzu, rice vinegar … and sometimes EVO:) Nothing extreme … just easing into balance:)
Join me – feels good to get ready for Spring.

New Intentions are set for this New Moon Evening.

What are your intentions this year?
