Sweat Once a Day!

from Mayo Clinic Site

Words from one of the Yoga Therapy Module last year – in the Ayurveda section.
Sometimes living in a very mild climate (California has mild climate … lovely mild Mediterranean climate envied world over), our sweat glands are not stimulated enough. Spoiled in such ideal climate, when we travel to places like Singapore, Japan, other tropical hot places of the world with sweltering temperatures with high humidity, we wither away in exhaustion.(that was me, lol) There, we cannot live without an AC and …still, we simply … wilt because our sweat glands are out of shape. To prevent that and for general day-to-day health, based on Aryuvedic health prescription, we are well served when we engage in an activity that allows us to perspire at least once a day … (I can explain this in posts to follow – checking my notes:) There is a belief that heating the body flushes out the toxins and some even believe that the heat can prevent or reverse cancer and other serious illnesses from lodging in ourselves. Provided that one is prudent to avoid heat strokes with enough hydration and intake of electrolysis, heat that causes us to perspire can be beneficial and history is a testimony to this belief prevalent in many cultures such as in sweat lodges in Native Indian cultures; Russian Banya; Finnish Sauna, Japanese Sento(and the sweltering summers!), Turkish Hammam …

So off I go – a chilly day for the Bay Area to turn on my inner heat by doing some yoga. Get some heat or turn on the natural furnace we have within:) Feel the beads of perspiration on your skin … then just relax and chill:) As Judith Lasater’s book title would say “Living Your Yoga”!

Authentic

Equipped with so much wisdom and knowledge ! That’s how I would describe Saraswathi Devi, who has been inspiring and teaching yoga for over 40 years. She is known in Berkeley as founder and lead instructor of CalStar Yoga program on UC Berkeley campus.

Such a treat to learn from her this weekend at Niroga Institute with other Karma Yogis!

One of the cohorts, always profound Ms. J, expressed our sentiment so well when she said

“Thank you for doing what you do.”

When we see a yogi in service, it’s instantly recognizable – that feeling of reverence we have when we are in presence before one who serves with love, compassion and equanimity even when faced with adversity. I can only hope to cultivate that kind of generosity in my service to others… besides, I appreciate the humor she shares with “unbridled joy”. (her words – ah… her voice has the deepest rich vibrations she could have been an opera singer; her flowing language so poetic, her humor so dead-on.)

Thank you for the training Niroga; thank you for the teachings Saraswathi Devi.
& Thank you for her students who came and shared their stories with us so that we know to recognize their whole being, their humanity – they are no different than us, just more brave, more patient, more …amazing!

Gratitude to Persian Hospitality

Persian hospitality is generous. They have an appreciation for aromatic flavors such as saffron and fresh herbs like mints … then dreamy scents of rose water and orange blossoms:) while fresh fruits are plentiful and rainbow of fresh vegetables are abundant.  My friend works away in the background making sure all her guests are at home and well fed – but after she makes sure that all her guests are well taken cared of, she would kick up her heels and dance with a wine glass in one hand! Where’s the music ? She calls out to her handsome son who then becomes a DJ, lol, while her partner busily fills the guests’ glasses.

She’s delightful!! Like her name that means “bright” or “light”, from the land of Hafiz and Rumi, she knows Joy – Yes, she knows how to give a party!  A joyful caregiver she is, there are “survivors” amongst us because of her. I admire how she brings life and joy to her family and friends.

All gratitude:)
