Winter Solstice

is coming up THIS SUNDAY – the 21st in Northern Hemisphere. Indeed, this Sunday is Winter Solstice as well as a New Moon – quite an auspicious day:)
Specifically if you are in San Francisco/Silicon Valley Bay Area … note the exact time of Winter Solstice to be 3:03 PM PST,
but most people celebrate the whole day as the Winter Solstice as I would:) In reality, I have come to learn that the Solstice occurs at a specific time – when the Sun is exactly overhead the Tropic of Capricorn.

“The Sun Stands Still” – The term “solstice” apparently comes from the Latin word solstitium, meaning the Sun stands still. This is because on this day, the Sun reaches its southern-most (or northern-most during the June Solstice) position as seen from the Earth. It seems to stand still at the Tropic of Capricorn (and Tropic of Cancer during the June Solstice) and then reverses its direction.

So now that you know Sunday is Winter Solstice, what are you going to do?

Celebrate !

Of course:) Will share some ideas with you in the post that follows…

Uji-Bridge

NOTE: In Japan, Winter Solstice = 冬至= “TOUJI” = literally the characters reads “Winter” “Comes” or “arrives” … The most famous celebration may be the one held at Ise Grand Shrine where apparently if you stand on the Uji-bridge, the sun rises from the middle of the Torii, the gate of the temple …and awash you with the sense of renewal – ridding self of the past, to bring in a fresh start with the coming of light…a reminder that suffering and pain may bring about darkness, it may even appear that shadows overtake BUT shadows are there because there is light, bright light whether hidden and underneath the layers and veils … light returns … BRIGHT & there’s renewal and rebirth.

It is believed from the old Eastern calendar that October is laden in Yin-energy, in November, subtle Yang-energy revitalizes … and Winter Solstice marks the lengthening or the strengthening of the Yang-energy to bring about a “balance” which is ironic because it’s the shortest day of the year … but a re-start of a cycle. This is a sign that a new year is coming along with the hope of sun rising on the horizon, warming our souls. There’s a spiritual meaning signifying the message of the faith in the cycle of coming season – that of rising sun, lengthening days coming ahead – that no matter how wrought with pain and suffering the past year may have been, any bad luck of the past year – its all to be washed away and there remains the purified Self – a NEW DAY of restored hope … a turning point from darkness to light and as always, Japanese celebrates with foods of significance to mark the day …

Yes, I am looking around for “Yuzu”… for the bath; making red beans rice risotto; and kabocha… Golden Orange … is the color evoked. Sun, sun, sun – Love.

Sacred Journey on PBS

sm_IMG_9996_01

This documentary’s local, San Francisco/Bay Area showing is at 8pm Tuesday evening … but if you are unable to watch it, just stream it later…Sacred Journey …with Bruce Feiler. Sounds fascinating!

A “pilgrimage”… for me, it’s been about visiting the family grave in Japan and paying our respect to our ancestors. We exist today, thanks to our forebears. We’ve evolved into what we are today and within each of us is the long long lineage from generations before.

Where do you make your pilgrimage to? Where do you want to make the next pilgrimage to? It need not be exotic distant lands – For some, every time, we step into the forest; every time we climb a mountain or dive into the ocean…or watch a sunrise… and sunset … it’s a pilgrimage of sorts.

Just wanted to thank you for caring for yourself enough by choosing to show up to my class this year – I know that sometimes you don’t always get that Ahhhhh-moment throughout due to my penchant for trying out new music or changing or not changing something, or maybe not enough props or volume not being quite right or being too cold or hot (let me know) … any hosts of reasons BUT please know that consistent practice in a group setting complements all other styles of yoga and exercise to enhance our mind-body wellness. With that faith, allowing me to be your guide this year – it’s been an honor. Any loyal student who has come to my class more than just few times – thank you for going with the flow of perfect imperfections – a true teachings of Zen, I say with sense of humor intact – Arigato:)

Oh, by the way,I want to appeal to you that my classes are weekly “regular” classes; NOT a workshop. Thus, please do not compare my classes to a special 2-3 hours long workshops. Still hoping it serves as a mini-retreat and a respite. While some things are permanent and stays the same, more “regular” students may prefer an occasional change in the playlist offering or the sequence reflecting the season or the natural cycles. Otherwise, let’s be honest, it can get boring or stale and more unconscious auto-pilot. True, in Bikram or in Ashtanga, there’s no sounds/music and it’s the same blueprint repeatedly – but YOU are different each time you are on the mat – you are the unique one, noticing your own differences relative to the sameness of the practice – So if you come once then come again, the first class may seem a little different the second time or it may be virtually identical – so kindly keep those things in mind. Again – It’s not a workshop and … I am trying to work with the Feng Shui of the particular place (including the speaker system).
Irritations may come up; annoyance and anxieties may come up:

breath in – ” …you…”:
Breath out – “…decide… ”

to have an

Open-mind,
Open-heart,
Open – expansive – spacious … serenity does not come because there’s no noise – because it’s so quiet. Inner calm is not derived because there’s no distractions or disturbances. In fact, there may be toxins brewing and chaos erupting in the most silent monastic retreat – if your innermost is not at peace. On the contrary, a real sense of serenity and peace may overtake you even if you were in the noisiest, loudest, even a scariest place – You are empowered to change your internal landscape – that’s the practice. That’s the intention.
