From cervical spine care to sluggish thyroid explored …with Queen of Poses

Recently a student approached me to say that she would like me to re-introduce inversions, specifically a shoulder-stand in the class. I tend to always opt for reducing the risks of any injury by playing it safe since I don’t recall any liability release signed by the student at these classes offered at gyms and clubs … at least at yoga studios, each student signs a release so there’s comfort in knowing that when some riskier asana may be weaved into a sequence.

I would normally instruct the harmless but effective bridge pose and then tell students that if they regularly practice shoulder-stands, they are welcome to sequence into that. In a public class with a wide range of ages and abilities, I allow the student to make the call based on their home practice or regularity to which they practice yoga. While I am certainly willing to instruct play by play on the how-to’s, with utmost attention to safety, I tend to be conservative and avoid some poses. But here’s a request and I am happy to oblige of course. This lovely student is always curious and eager to challenge herself. She does look so much better than when she first made her appearance to my class nervous with darting eyes … now her eyes are shiny and reflective like surface of deep clear lake and her energy level calm but revitalized – yes : ) Yoga’s working! This is an old article but relevant as ever since our body remains the same – just a little older – lol – The writer is an instructor who teaches in E. Bay …right after Richard Rosen’s class which I sometimes attend when I want to hear someone who non-stop talks and seemingly incessantly instructs. He doesn’t lecture about monkey mind, yak, yak, pop spirituality – he basically does not “lecture”. Rather he really instructs one tissue, one joint, one cartilage at a time. That works better for my focus than being lectured about monkey mind because it’s all about the dynamic “process” not this static state, unattainable as we are told to cleared it of thoughts, here likened to a monkey jumping from a tree to trea. A thought arises – how irritating it is to be talked down to cultivate it. Then judgement and critiquing enters this mind, & it’s over – that peace is lost, more thoughts take over. SOS.

Good article to be aware of the strain on the neck if it feels funny or beyond funny – in pain! Check out this article written quite a while ago but still holds true as our anatomy hasn’t changed – in fact there are probably more people suffering from straight neck (loss of that c-curve) than ever before as more of us are always checking our cell phones and constantly looking down to tablets and all other forms of electronic gadgets.

So rather than hand-stands and head-stands, shoulder-stands seem much more accessible with the benefit lacking in the former mentioned inversions. There are many benefits but which benefit am I referring to exactly?

The reason this student wanted to practice the shoulder-stand had nothing to do with straight neck vs. C-curve neck. It’s what all of us can related to as we make our way into impending holiday season – first comes the candies, the treats of Halloween; then Thanksgiving and … the holiday season and what does all these have in common? Yes, all the eating that goes along with celebrations. Love it : ) Apparently, Americans on average gain 5lbs during the holiday season and if you don’t lose that 5 lbs after the holiday season, in 2 years, that accumulates to 10 lbs, then next year, 15 lbs and so on – scary, indeed very scary, lol.

While I don’t think there’s a direct link to weight loss as this student appears to have read somewhere by doing shoulder stands, it is said that the pose helps with thyroid balance and that thyroid balance does contribute to better metabolism. It is believed that under-active thyroid means low basal metabolic rate which causes weight gain and difficulty losing that extra weight. Same tends to hold true for an overactive thyroid with messed up metabolism which causes a weight gain and difficulty with weight loss.

Safe methods are best taught by near-PT-level trained yoga teacher/therapist or Iyengar influenced or educated teachers when it comes to inversions – yes, we don’t just throw ourselves up unless you were a gymnast in past training. It’s also lovely if you can partner with someone so there’s an assist to set up the form – spotting the lift – so in this respect, I love Judith’s inversions – in which risks are reduced but as effective. You can stay in it for as long as you’d like – With proper guidance, we can do it with ease and comfort; not with strain and force.

“Be what you want to be now; Don’t wait.”

Ran into Ganesha at Y-Yoga in Vancouver … Believed to be a “remover of obstacles”. Sometimes, I can be the biggest obstacle to myself; so removing of that ego helps in the process of purifying and nourishing the soul, mind and body…Just practice; get out of your own way through the physical practice first. Then everything else seems to follow with more ease.

There used to be no classes Sunday afternoons and evenings at a lovely suburban studio in the community … So when we took a look at the schedule that time frame appeared to be the only slot available… I had been warned by the predecessor and other yoga teachers that Sunday late afternoon is the “dead” hour and the worst slot ever, so don’t do it. It’s not prime-time; it’s an outlier zone? Sunday evenings – if we are actively engaged, there are concerts, hikes, games, social engagements like showers and birthday parties people are coming back from, perhaps there are family outings and dinner commitments … OR one may want to just sit in front of the fireplace and not leave home … Still. I do it …not heeding the well meaning advice as the studio itself was encouraging. Besides, I was passionate about sharing this. So for the last 2 years, I stuck to that schedule – rushing back from East Bay or South Bay, San Francisco or wherever I may have been – the worst for my own cortisol level was when I was in Asia …rushing back with the worst jet lag – seems I was the one needing to take the class; not lead it LOL but I was all about EMPATHY. I kept at it because I felt the warm support of the studio management and … I really loved the students who may or may not show up. Each time, there’s a hint of transformation and to witness that was an honor and a joy. We each wake up to that place of crystal clarity.

Quite ironic that because I am pursuing deeper study of yoga; and wanted to do the invitational from Judith Hanson Lasater herself at the same time trudging along on the yoga therapist training, that I am gifting the class as subbing out that class is no longer an option – iSad – but… I am letting it go. It’s the Universe and my higher self telling me to gift it as it was never mine to begin with. I can be more of a service with so much more to offer when it’s the right time and place – refreshed and regenerated. So …Letting it go. Will miss the space we created. Thank you for the opportunity to the management and thank you to anyone who took the trouble to show up so I may hold the space and impart tiny little specks of teachings learned from all my past and present teachers.

Tomorrow, going back to last day of Judith’s invitational she only holds every few years … So I am so glad I’m doing it. NOW. One thing I have learned from past losses – don’t wait for the perfect timing that will never come. Just do it. Don’t put off. Learn from the best – She really teaches the way I learn, to borrow her phrasing. I feel fortunate to have this opportunity.

Judith Hanson Lasater’s Invitational

IMG_0061_smallThis time is the last of the three part series this year where Judith will invite her students to a sangha of learning. It’s quite a luxury to get to do this… I could pass it up and wait for another one that may happen in couple of years or … do it. Felt a little intimated when I realized you have these 10-30+ year student of hers showing up to these …but some fresh 20-somethings to balance out:) Such loyalty and it’s because she really keys in on your needs and answers them. Hope I can get to that level of focus and clarity as well.
We had the 4 days in March; then June and now in October, we meet again – loving the progression in themes. Many familiar faces – this is a tough time of the year for all to make it to San Francisco. Nothing in comparison to those showing up from out-of-state, but it was a struggle for me – rather an ironic turn of events to lose something in order to gain this experience but – here I am – I count my blessings on how lucky I am to make it to this special Sangha – those passionate about learning from a veteran master teacher who imparts all that she has learned from BKS and then her own yoga life experiences and skills – while she maintained her balance with raising a family and aging gracefully.

IF YOU CAN’T BE IN PHYSICAL SPACE WITH JUDITH, IT’S ALRIGHT. IT’S OKAY; YOU CAN STILL LEARN FROM HER VIA HER OFFICE HOURS BECAUSE SHE IS KIND OF LIKE THAT MOM-LIKE “PROFESSOR” OF YOGA IN THE WEST 🙂 Has anyone ever wondered how she can be so prolific and at the same time so present at the same time? I have.

Some Q & A’s:

An interesting question:
Many of us experienced that Pranayama causes anxiety rather than bring on the calm and clarity. That progression in the Ashtanga yoga from the limb of Asana to Pranayama, then to Pratyahara …is what is supposed to happen… but anxiety stops us in our tracks at times when maintaining that ratio becomes strained … To that question, Judith answered something that we hadn’t realized …

Her answer as to why some people experience Anxiety when we make intentional breath control to affect the mind, the emotions, the mood – was VERY INTERESTING – kind of an AHAHHH moment.
Then her answer as to what to do about it when anxiety arises during pranayama applies in other areas of life where one experiences anxieties when one isn’t supposed to. Has that ever happened to you? After the practice, that practitioner was asked – if that anxiety she had described come up – the answer? No. It’s magic? No, a certain revelation pointed out by Judith shifts everything in a way to undo the forces of anxiety from arising – it’s not just about breathing deeply or exhaling longer, etc. etc the quick over-simplified cure for all.

I cannot share any photos from the day that was filled with asana, both restorative, non restorative and then therapeutic; pranayama, and talks filled with wisdom and … of course … sprinkled with lots of humor. Photos and videos for our own learning but strictly non-public so that she says, we can create a place of total safety and trust. I respect that.
