Is yoga fitness or … therapy?

It’s both.

Yoga is a great multi-faceted form of exercise, an effective fitness program, incorporating mindfulness to movements while building strength; improving flexibility and fostering spiritual growth or even transcendence. Done regularly, the practice serves as a potent preventative medicine by improving our heart health; muscle tone; stretching and releasing the connective tissues, improving one’s balance … all these great benefits.

But all times, it’s therapeutic. I think I heard Judith Lasater say, yoga to her has always been more than a fitness regimen but more about the therapeutics and quieting of the agitation in the minds.

For cancer survivors, it’s especially a safe place, an empathetic supportive community, to aid their healing process through the use of expertly sequenced lesson plan.

I learned so much from this expert teacher and equally as much from her students who showed up to fully engage in Lorien’s expertly led group yoga class and then stayed awhile to share their stories with us So many smiles, even a joke shared by a cancer survivor student to which we all laughed with; good vibes; SO Very inspiring conquering that fear we all have – that fear of the ultimate unknown, to be so vulnerable to open up to that fear we all share – fear of suffering, fear of death ! It’s about mastering your fears – this class – and acceptance of the impermanence while slowly regaining the energy to be empowered. It’s such a powerful class I recommend highly as most everybody I know are eventually affected by cancer, suffered by friends and family, if not directly by themselves.

Thank you for holding that space of learning and sharing Lorien !   Beautiful souls lit up the beautiful space. Namaste:)

Subbing tomorrow – Restorative-Yin Class

@ a local hot yoga studio. Hot yoga studio? Yes, there will be a logical flow to this one – unlike the pure restorative class I used to teach in the past, I will compensate for the lack of props by other means:) The heat and a bit more movements that flows through for a detox effect. At least, that’s the plan:)

Today I attended a teacher training titled “Integrating Cancer Survivors into All Yoga Classes” with Lorien Neargarder, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT.

E-RYT means “Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher” meaning you have an experience of at the very least 2 years teaching;
“500” stands for the number of hours of your yoga teacher training you have undergone. Most common basic is 200 hours.
“C-IAYT” – means Certified International Association of Yoga Therapists.
As of today, there are only 27 accredited yoga therapy programs in the world (Canada, India, New Zealand, Brazil and USA) to certify yoga teachers as yoga “therapists” according to the standards set by IAYT. I feel so blessed to be on this journey.

It’s enough

Addressing the curvature of our spine this week … that spine that includes the often forgotten … NECK, the cervical spine:)

You can’t be all things to all people… Trust yourself first.

– Judith Hanson Lasater

We all know we can’t please everyone and foolish of us to even try. If you go to my favorite Iyengar teacher’s class, he speaks non-stop throughout the class about every minute details of your body parts and that … is so helpful in retaining that “attention” and focus. Some people need that. He is so full of words, some people call it OCD and other call it mindful attention to all details. When I auditioned I felt the need to fill the void with every little explanation and minute details of asana benefits, breath awareness, etc. basically to showcase how much I know. It was not really about the students and their needs but about the teacher and her needs to prove herself as the “knower” – it can be quite annoying for the students if the teacher habitually do this. Depending on the TPO, depending on the intention of the class it’s best to … just hold a quiet space – no preaching, no lecturing, no explaining … not even teaching. Sometimes, it’s the quiet, the silence … just holding space is enough. Students showed up because they already know. There’s no need to prove anything to keep driving the point. The point is … tune in to trust yourself.

Teachers should create a safe space
in the class, keep the focus on the breath and the flow
of the asanas. It is best to refrain from excessive talking,
explaining or preaching during the class—the job of the
Yoga teacher is to help people to feel safe in every aspect of
their self-experience.

Yes.

Need not start reciting the Yoga Sutras or anything – but suggestion to weave in the psycho-spiritual-mysticism – just a suggestion by Saraswathi Devi …yoga teacher veteran of 40 some years … to weave in that… magic is quite challenging in some setting to say the least. Yes, I spent the whole weekend in Berkeley … doesn’t it show?
