Subbed a restorative class at Bay Club this Sunday morning at 10am – the class before mine was vinyasa taught by my dear friend. Her class was running a bit late and so I looked in while waiting, noticing the fact that it was a very packed class (no surprise – she’s a superb teacher). After her class and before the one I’m subbing, I greeted her with a hug, when I told her the size of her class being rather impressive she said – well, it’s actually smaller class than usual. Usually there are more like 50 – Then, modestly she said – it’s that time slot – it’s always like this – we both nodded knowingly – “it’s a church”. Yeah, it’s a worship time. Sunday morning class tends to be like church attending – hope not to sound sacrilegious but many of us no longer go to church and so … instead, this is our church. The entire Sunday is that intention of dedication towards well-being for ourselves and others. Sean Corn’s class Sunday morning at Wanderlust was exactly that for me (the young people with hangovers from Saturday nights do not show up, lol) and so … that explains the packed Restorative class in Vancouver Sunday morning where we stepped in ready to be restored both hardware and software. Check out the Sunday morning classes in your neighborhood – it’s probably packed as it’s the spiritual for the non-spirituals.

IMG_3379So many people have shoulder problems …Sometimes it’s all the burden we carry on our shoulders – literally.
IMG_3391 Here’s Baxter Bell, MD, one of my teachers at Yoga Therapy TT sessions.
IMG_3395Don’t try this at home – just kidding – only try with knowledge of science behind the move, that is, to know why you are moving this or that way and why that’s good – so know the why’s OR with a guidance from a teacher with experience in yoga therapy or physical therapy.
Speaking of science – Science behind Yoga & Meditation is HERE for us to embrace and … practice. One thing people sometimes overlook is in their urge to master meditation, they forget the steps. There’s general lack of rest amongst us which apparently is based on our notion of lack of time – lack of sleep sets up the inner-environment of distress and speeds up the aging process. Why would you want that? Unfortunately, insomnia sufferers are everywhere. For them, no matter how fatigued, luscious sleep does not come easily. & yet, your whole system is in need for a tune-up and a … restoration. Your brain function along with everything else will eventually decline if you do not treat your body with loving kindness. Here’s some more information to keep up this regular practice.

Awhile back, I was in one of those hard tough drippy with sweat class where a teacher cracked her whip and yelled, shaming the students, “THIS isn’t one of those – you know the kind of yoga you just sprawl out and relax – eliciting smirks and embarrassed laughter – this is hard work! We are going to build HEAT and burn the toxins to ashes – we are going to transform!!!”. The energy suddenly changed from that of dragged heaviness to that similar to a military boot-camp. I never went back to that class even though I probably could use the aerobics, the muscle strengthening and nagging lecture on empowering – actually, no, not anymore. I’m over that phase in life when I needed that approach. Our needs change with our circumstances.

99.9% of those who show up to the kind of class I like to teach is already a very very hard working people. To me, it’s enough that they showed up. The rest will take care of itself. As Judith’s introductory somewhere says “We work hard everyday in our lives”. Yes, the students I get are hard working either because eyes on the prize, they are high achievers or because they are caring for others; because they are so giving of themselves to others – or they are suffering from the aftermaths of overwork and extreme striving or giving. The practice or the style of yoga should meet the needs of each unique individual – those needs that change over time and space. I respect and embrace all styles of yoga and each has its place to serve the varied needs of the students.

Pacific Ocean … The theme for last 3 days was the “ocean”. What is that Ocean? You will know if you practice with or without me, yes.

“We are visitors on this planet. We are here for one hundred years at the very most. During that period we must try to do something good, something useful, with our lives. if you contribute to other people’s happiness, you will find the true meaning of life.”

― Dalai Lama XIV

Have been at Judith Hanson Lasater’s invitational studies this past 3 days… missing the last day, iSad. I miss this great teacher, I miss the fellow yogis, I miss the vibe, the sangha of the like-minded who is so refueled by this teacher.

There’s no fancy playlist – no music – there’s no fancy location of a retreat but it’s an urban retreat of sorts – a refuge as I was refueled and regenerated. WHILE learning. Last night, normally, by evening, I am absolutely exhausted but after dinner, I had so much energy, I took care of all that was neglected last few weeks. With clear lucid mind, all is possible.

And earlier this month at Niroga’s Yoga Therapy Teacher Training … very interesting – know some people with this problem. YOGA is the remedy, that is, the right kind of yoga … lecture by Baxter Bell, MD and Yoga Educator.

Learning from teachers’ teachers, my class is now all about prevention – not so glamorous but yes, prevention or if too late? Then, it’s all about defrosting what’s already frozen and bringing back the ease and grace in our everyday living – That is my intention. Where does that lead us to ? It’s not just the shoulders, it’s in all areas of the body, mind and life – to melt away the blockages not by means of HEAT and stress but by way of methodical, mindful movements and stillness to bring about the balance… the restoration.

Our Amazing Heart

IMG_3558Original cause of my late father’s demise – if only I had known what I know today …sometimes when one is in eye of the storm, we just cannot see so well.
IMG_3624

So here are some take-aways from Cardiovascular System Module. We learned that usually issues with the heart is at the peak of the pyramid of other abnormalities or dysfunction that had not been addressed. It’s a culmination of issues unresolved such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, low HRV, Leaky Gut Syndrome, various heart disease. The heart literally aches:

When we are not Present
When we abandon love and care
When we are fragmented
When we are disconnected

All the above, AND when we are not equipped with tools and techniques to “self-soothe”. The heart disease is a manifestation at the peak of the pyramids of cumulative imbalances. For some, heart issues could be something one is born with. Luckily, those people tend to have built up the resilience, having lived with it from birth and not a malaise that developed as a result of lifestyle choices. Disease tends to find lodging in our body as a result of series of “infinite insults” we inflict on ourselves. While not all are self-inflicted, the body endures many insults to such degree that it stops cooperating. Only when we learn to HONOR and APPRECIATE our body, our inner healer re-emerges to aid us. It’s through self love, not by fearing, shaming, berating our body with all its flaws … but to HONOR and CELEBRATE this body made in the image of God. That’s the first step on the healing journey.
IMG_3653Why the reason you have to deal with chronic stress – Yoga gives you the techniques and tools to manage stress and energy level better.IMG_3648
Heart – Heart – Heart – One can’t help but marvel at this amazing organ, developed first in the embryo state, a central unique muscle organ that moves 5-6 liters of blood with each heartbeat. That’s with one heart beat, the entire blood volume is put in motion. I always knew the importance of the heart but marveled at the more astral energetic aspects of this beating heart …

We learned that:

“Heart is more powerful than the brain.”
& our
“Cells need downtime for recovery.”

Common sense? Apparently not put in practice for many of us, where the Heart is treated as a mere pump to “work out”. It’s way way more than just a pump:

(1) Heart is electrical conduction system with electric impulses and looked at as an energy body, has 5000 times more powerful seat of electromagnetic energy field than brain’s.
IMG_3669
(2) It is a seat of compassion, kindness and LOVE.

IMG_3560IMG_3564IMG_3566All systems within us, are integrated and inter-connected and affects our heart health.
