Spring Equinox & Naw Ruz Blessing

According to my beautiful Persian friend, Naw Ruz means New Day as tomorrow is the first day of spring after today, Spring Equinox.  I was anointed with drops of dewy rose water, had morsels of delicate cookies and sips of wine accompanied by delicious green herb rice and green quiche/frittata called Kuku? Some cute name this dish has and so scrumptious ! Special symbolic foods are served as a tradition to celebrate Persian New Year!

Golden calligraphy of Hafiz poetry graced this shrine thoughtfully decorated with symbolic New Year’s auspicious eggs (origin of Easter eggs?), bulb flowers of tulips and hyacinth, iris, violets and orchid blossoms still blooming from the winter season, welcoming spring with refreshed smile – school of goldfish swimming in water, pot of green grass, herbs, coins, strands of beads and a rock and ashes and … beautifully lit candles on marble. The symbolism of each carefully selected item curated… but first, to begin with the ritual of looking into the central mirror to set New Years resolution … an affirmation …got me to really appreciate not only this New Day but our friendship. (there were even “Meoto” rice bowls of cherry blossoms from Japan:) So honored to learn about this celebration that dates back centuries, steeped in long Persian history – Persian civilization dates back so far as one the oldest on earth so particularly fascinated to learn the symbolic meanings to all that graced before my eyes. Thank you for sharing your light, dear Friend:)

Variety of fresh spring herbs are folded into this green rice and frittata – Tastes like Spring !
Here’s a poem by Hafiz I found that made me think of my peace loving or just plain, loving and elegant Persian friend:

ELEGANCE
It
Is not easy
To stop thinking ill
Of others.
Usually one must enter into a friendship
With a person
Who has accomplished that great feat himself
Then
Something
Might start to rub off on you
Of that
True
Elegance

Laughter comes easy when you are breathing that air of “true elegance” …it’s rubbing off, as I set my Affirmation for this New Day.

***
Sky report is cloudy with some rain but undeterred, cherry blossoms are slowly starting to blossom. Undeniably …

SPRING had arrived.

Happy New Year!!!

Last Friday in Tokyo

Bunny meditates:)

My mother was born the year of Rabbit so whenever I see a rabbit … I am a bit drawn to its image. This is a Rabbit mask with lotus on the third eye. The artist was there but the mask was not on sale as it was a gift she gave to this studio/gallery/dining space owner. It’s a retro vintage time slip.

This is a Rooster year. What is your year? It probably comes as no surprise that I am a ______ 🙂

A riverside section of Tokyo (isn’t it hard to believe this area too is part of Shinjyuku … the quiet residential section, not that Times Square-ish mega neon craziness of Shinjyuku downtown) where silk/cloths for kimono are dyed the old-fashion method. It was a venue reintroducing this tradition through a Walk through Artists Gallaries and shops … Kimono wearing was encouraged for the young and old, a tradition fast disappearing but revived just for the weekend.

I will miss this town, the people where always there’s a pleasant blend of the old (this) and the new; the formal vs. the whimsical; the stress vs. peace and serenity. Everything was delicious to the five-senses. Sayonara. Thank you for the mini-tour C-san. Returnng to California next week.

Earthing

Resting cat like for now … until another day on the beach where she can again exercise her poetic licence.

I am a creature of this earth
I make my imprints
I care not
High Tides Low Tides
washes away my imprints
I welcome the repetition
Saluting the Sun
each time, fresh, crisp and sharp
molding the sands before the next
Swell of the sea that breaks upon the shore
Saluting the wind
I never tire of this
imprints are meant to be washed away
over and over, such predictability, the assurance, the security
knowing that the unstoppable waves keep coming
intent on living in the moment…untethered
face the sun, fill up with its brightness
drink up the sky
soak up the salty moist winds
frolic silly on the sands
play
with this creature
who sprung up with wagging tail
full of joy
alert and living this Now…
Unleashing this intention to live
fully, on and off the mat,
on and off the beach.
Imprints tattooed within.

– one day in the life of a canine:) woof!

lots of sand-dollars this low tide afternoon – there’s so much wealth deposited here…in our beautiful Californian seashore.

Unlike Southern California, northern California waters are frigid freezing teeth chattering COLD; blue blood vessels popping out as your brains are popping awake!
So plugged in – grounded ! (check this out- click here.)
As a kapha, wading out of the waters, I am going to find the flow, the balance between the strength and ease, using techniques learned from yoga and then a little (big) help from all the beauty this world holds for us; in nature; in people; in their hearts.

It’s not all so bad when you stop to think of 3 things to be grateful for today. (Reminded at Alex’s) Just 3 things. Each day. Namaste:)
