Soma means body, …(I am) … in service of helping bodies to reduce or eliminate pain, normalize range of motion, and just generally get back to the happy, fully functional, badass state that is their birthright.

(YAY, YES)Brooke Thomas, Soma Happy

Soma means something else in Sanskrit – it means nectar of immortality or a sweet drink from a fountain of youth(!) … and it doesn’t just drip but you have to siphon it out, squeeze it, juice it out is how I visualize the harvesting of that nectar… a divine drink we all likely not refuse. Anyway, found her honesty to be refreshing – and made me think about my motives and reasons behind doing yoga…other than experiencing first hand its healing powers:

I’ve done yoga for years, but have never really considered myself a yogini. Let’s just say that as someone whose body is built more on the dense end of the brick sh*t house to Gumby spectrum, contorting myself into a weird shape that had a Sanskrit name didn’t exactly come naturally to me.

– Brooke Thomas

I don’t know – why do people get into what they get into with passion? For the yoga profession, at least for me, the central reason is that desire to help others feel better, stronger, renewed; desire to help them feel less pain or be pain-free, naturally – it’s funny that all the time when I was getting my formal education, I never thought of pursuing such field – and if I had, I probably would have chosen another major and a profession but at that time, I was rather self-absorbed and determined to reach some height on a career ladder that had nothing to do with caring or body, mind & spirit (but all about the mind).

At the same time, being young and vibrant, I had no one around me close who were sick or injured or mending … and as a result I had no feelings of empathy or compassion for the weak or the suffering. If I saw someone in need, my tendencies would have been to avoid them… Oddly only when I was in midst of college and finishing, I started to encounter break-downs of health around me and finally myself as well, a bit later on (probably from stress dealing with others needing, demanding care). My father probably had 3-5 major operations before his final demise; my mother is alive but tends to focus on the negatives post-hip surgery (successful if you can call walking with a walker a success) and so… hospital visits are not foreign to me. There was a period when I commuted to the hospital maybe 1-2 times a day to visit with flowers and bento or soup while trying to make a go of my own career which had nothing to do with healthcare or wellness. Yoga was something I did for stress-management but teaching it was big departure from the original desire to merely deepen my knowledge because … essentially at the core is always a curious student within. I guess I wanted to learn about the technique that helped me and how to apply it more to be more effective off the mat, outside of the yoga studio. Judith H. Lasator’s book, “Living Your Yoga” is highly recommended for that end as we juggle through life.

Recalling a peer yogini at Judith Lasator’s training, there is this beautiful, and I mean, BEAUTIFUL yogini – by my definition that means perfect body at least in appearance fit for a yoga journal magazine cover? let’s call her Minnie:) and she is a therapists for children with physical limitations; then there’s another beautiful yogini who teaches yoga to women going through cancer care … such beautiful heart they have … in awe. I mean, I am looking at Minnie and ask – so why did you choose to go into what you do when you can easily be teaching fit beautiful people at some gym? She says with wide eyes then laughs “why, isn’t it obvious? Look at me! I am so broken!” & I look back at her – WHAT? Broken??? You are NOT broken – far from – don’t you know, you are just so BEAUTIFUL. There stood before me a beautiful yogini, a yoga instructor, who helps disabled children in water – she, to me looks healthy and fit AND far from broken BUT she believes she’s broken… speechless. Reassuring her that he is NOT broken (that’s the past and she’s on the mend!) but beautiful, I think everybody wants to feel vibrant and balanced in a wholesome, natural way and that … too is what I seek for self and others. Not broken but strong; regenerated and renewed at the cellular level.

So … that’s it. I am trying to find the best tool to that end – I am not a doctor so cannot find a cure (too late for med school) but can dispense other kinds of remedies to bring comfort I think – and if yoga is not that best tool, I will find some other means but by far, with all that I have looked into, yoga is the best as long as you truly embody your body while doing it and not make it into a “showtime” or something competitive. Those pursuits are strictly off the mat; outside of the studio space.

yogatimemagfrom Time Magazine article “How Yoga can Wreck your body”.

Keep in mind this – Click here for my revered guru’s reminder always. Unless you are in that league of yogis practicing yoga at least 2 hours a day REGULARLY, do not strain to do everything to the max intensity you saw on a mag cover – She’s so funny – it’s okay to be that one with the 3-fold “bloody” “frickin'” thick mat!

sm_IMG_6135Been making this home-made but now looks like they are on shelves. If you make it yourself, you can mix the oils to come up with “that” certain scent that evokes a certain “place” within your mind. More unique but these can serve as ideas. If you study aromatherapy, you will learn to group them – like chemistry, some scents just do not mix well and there’s no synergy when one scent erases or counters the other – need them to be complementary, not fighting each other. (you can say that about people too!)

Don’t Wanna Cry

My April 10th Amuro Namie video was taken down so here is another one to replace even though it’s not as nice as the one that disappeared …back then, amazing to see the diversity on stage when there was … a bit of racism even over there – maybe even more so in Asia. My parents probably would have freaked out if I were to hang out like that even though they were very progressive and looking back, pretty liberal, international folks…A talk from a grandmother before taking off to US on a tatami mat was to never marry inter-racially because, “you come from a good family – NO, I am not prejudiced” but “you have to think about the children – so never marry anyone with blue eyes, etc. promise, okay?” This is coming from the mouth of a sweetest, well educated, most refined lady … So if she were alive, she probably would have gone into comatose. Yes, Japan crowned a multi-racial “half (breed)” Miss Japan … and put in context that this video is aged – coming from two decades ago – it represents a rebellious stage for Namie for the time, that may have been upsetting to the common Japanese sensibility back then – today, I’d like to think diversity is embraced more.

Why is the video on the internet in the first place if a blogger is unable to feature it, bring more attention to it to the segment of population who would never come across this song anyway (and be perfectly okay about that)? If it is not meant for the public to be shared then, don’t put it on the internet- I make no profit out of highlighting that video and
most artists thinks in the positive not the negative so obviously, it’s not the artist – but someone profiteering from keeping it from going viral (this is old stuff anyway).

Can’t imagine an artist actually wasting time to be policing the internet to take down her own images – rather, she would be happy to have her youthful days video revisited – rather than be forgotten – it’s such a throwback…where J-Pop wasn’t about just artificially cute girls like dolls – here’s substance.

& speaking of racial issues – it’s like a new age for this to happen in that old country – click here.

いつの日か (some day) I’ll be there…
I’ve gotta find a way, so let me go
Because baby I don’t wanna cry
I’ve gotta find a way, so let me go
Because baby I don’t wanna cry

そういう事でしか (that’s the only way to ascertain security)
たしかめあう事が できなくって (“but keep doing that” and you won’t be able to protect the loved ones, won’t be able to protect anything that’s really precious)
愛しい人 大切な何もかも

I’ve gotta find a way, so let me go

Because baby I don’t wanna cry

I’ve gotta find a way, so let me go
動けなくなるよ
Because baby I don’t wanna cry

La la la…祈るだけじゃ もう 屆かない (Praying alone no longer delivers)

Fundamentals … revisiting:)

sm_IMG_6246A big SIGGHHHHHHH for self-care:) How can you profess to lend a hand or even possibly contribute towards healing others if you don’t know how to heal yourself first? While well meaning, “broken” people cannot fix others before they are fixed themselves. Through actual experience, there’s empathy … then one can come from a place of authentic wholeness, natural balance and … heartfelt genuine kindness:) Restored. While All yoga is “restorative”, the kind I refer to would be the one passed onto a disciple like Judith Lasater directly from BKS Iyengar and it’s a discipline even though it does not seem like it – the style that restores the Ojas – vigor – vitality – energy – prana – chi … by harmonizing the nervous system, balancing the chakras and purifying by eliminating the toxins out of your system. At least once a week … and feel the magic. Some of the best things in life are not complicated – it’s simple, natural and … intuitive.

Quite sleep deprived myself (is it hypocritical that someone fighting an urge to lie down and take a nap is preaching about NOT treating Savasana as a pass out nap time ? It’s a light yoga nidra and I really do get over my fatigue better myself if there’s a guide, a voice that leads a in-body trekking trip – in complete silence, I probably would be the first to be fast asleep) a bit drained from the 10 hrs RT drive to and fro Mt. Shasta within 3 days and then instead of giving up on CBF – I lied – I actually ended up going to Cherry Blossom Festival as we could not miss San Francisco Taiko Dojo’s performance… Taiko can be mind-blowing and so … highly recommended for those who have never heard them. Outdoors, it’s fine but indoors, real taiko drumming may not be for the faint hearted… perhaps sitting by the door can give you an option to slip out should the vibe become just too much. Even outdoors, at one point, I felt a bit faint…like dizzy… overwhelmed during a piece called “tsunami” composed by the grand master Seiichi Tanaka.

This morning got up early to make it to yoga class I decided to commit to – been searching for the right class, right schedule (Yes, teachers have a home self practice but they too seek out peer’s or someone they emulate to learn from at all times I think) so things all fit but resulting in less sleep for this night owl- Would you rather sleep extra 2 hrs or make it to a yoga class? That all depends on the teacher and I felt, I needed to be there at the expense of sleep… Anybody who loves yoga would understand how loyalty is fostered sometimes:

… while many of us in the West equate yoga with asana, and while asana is certainly an important segment of classical and Hatha-Yoga, for the most part it’s a preparation for pranayama and never practiced by itself….Posture practiced, alone, without pranayama and meditation, surely has some physical value, but alone, it’s not likely that it could ever lead to liberation.

– Richard Rosen

Unlike so many yoga celebrities who usually promote their books and cart them around for marketing (& nothing is wrong with that – it shows the exuberance in wanting to share) , Richard seems distant from that concept. Thinking I can purchase a copy of his book right from him, perhaps even getting it autographed – I inquire about it and he says… “I’m not in the business of selling books.” Maybe he said I don’t peddle my own books. “You can get it on Amazon.” Not with any attitude but kind of like in an absent minded way …Whenever I go to yoga workshops of those celebrity yoga teachers with a book published, usually books are readily available for purchase and so … he is the first one who does not – some might call that lacking in business sense and enthusiasm for his own creation; some may call him not corrupted or living in a non material world of little ambition …I think either is fine but he’s just the first one who is like that.

The best way to describe him might be … He is probably an old-style in that he’s what a yoga instructor used to be like when yoga was seen more a sub-culture – when yogis were considered a little too weird or even, counter-culture to be understood by the mainstream… So despite authoring few books, he does not represent a commercialization of yoga … and appear not to care much about numbers even though yoga must be his FT work? Or maybe it’s not work or career for him but a calling. Humble and really curious and aware – a sage. He is just so modest to the point of being self-deprecating but very particular about precision, insisting that the thighs be turned out or turned in, the throat be relaxed and … most importantly, to allow the brain to “shrink”…Guess our egos and heads are getting too big for our own good, in this modern world. He allows us to recognize that.

He shared that BKS Iyengar used to say how we need to let the brain be the object, not the subject... Like Judith Lasater, it’s so cool to learn from someone who actually trained under and got the quote directly in person from one of the greatest innovator of yoga in modern times, BKS Iyengar … there are probably only a handful of senior, first generation yoga teachers, basically our teachers teachers’ teacher? Maybe it’s cultural, but that kind of lineage is so precious in my value system – it’s so … authentic. That tradition to learn from the elders in the oral/hands-on tradition. While it’s popular to say that we are each our own guru – really? Actually, there’s really a guru out there – someone who dedicated hours of training, a lifetime and poured over hours studying texts and that, often times in Sanskrit … Most likely, practiced way more than I ever have. Don’t want to gush over him or idolize him at all but here’s my earlier impression of his teaching.

He seems to care less in self-promotion, ending the class with a promotion not for self but rather for HIS teacher’s workshop … ha ha ha. Neat to realize that every teacher, even at his level, has a teacher:) Everything is passed down and you put your own essence, your spice into the teachings…

Feeling blessed to be able to pursue my interest … Arigato … it’s not about success or failure but being… HAPPY:) I love yoga or I love how yoga makes you “feel”. It’s not intellectual or concerns over theories and concepts even – in a way philosophies and history and even Sanskrit that he’s so deeply into – all those things really doesn’t matter to me. Wish you all could “feel” for yourself, what I am talking about.

To borrow Jake Shimabukuro’s words, it “zeros you out”!
