{"id":4964,"date":"2014-10-12T22:07:05","date_gmt":"2014-10-13T05:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wagayoga.com\/blog\/?p=4964"},"modified":"2014-10-14T08:16:15","modified_gmt":"2014-10-14T15:16:15","slug":"prana-yama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wagayoga.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/prana-yama\/","title":{"rendered":"Prana-Yama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wagayoga.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/fujiakimountain.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wagayoga.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/fujiakimountain.jpg\" alt=\"fujiakimountain\" width=\"276\" height=\"183\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4965\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eight limbs of ashtanga yoga or Raja yoga or any yoga from my perspective&#8230;are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Yama \u2013 code of conduct, self-restraint&#8230;discipline.<br \/>\nNiyama \u2013 commitments to practice, study and devotion<br \/>\n\u0100sana \u2013 integration of mind and body through physical practice.<br \/>\nPr\u0101\u1e47\u0101y\u0101ma \u2013 regulation of breath for focus and healing.<br \/>\nPraty\u0101h\u0101ra \u2013 abstraction of the senses, withdrawal of the senses.<br \/>\nDh\u0101ra\u1e47\u0101 \u2013 concentration, one-pointedness of mind<br \/>\nDhy\u0101na \u2013 meditation (quiet activity that leads to samadhi)<br \/>\nSam\u0101dhi \u2013 the quiet state of blissful awareness, superconscious state. <\/p>\n<p>Why is Yama, first of the eight?  It&#8217;s self-explanatory -Yama (restraints) consists of five parts: <\/p>\n<p>ahimsa (non-violence) or love&#8230;<br \/>\nsatya (truthfulness)<br \/>\nasteya (non-stealing)<br \/>\nbrahmacharya (abstinence from temptations that does not serve you &#8211;  or &#8230;no comment)<br \/>\naparigraha (non-covetousness)<\/p>\n<p>The five codes of yama lay down the prerequisites for elimination of fear, fear that prevents us from acts of courage and love,<br \/>\nprerequisites to attain a tranquil mind&#8230; easily said than practiced, of course.  It&#8217;s a repetitive practice; at least an effort.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe a bit Native-American-ish but very traditional Japanese name that contains the character &#8220;YAMA&#8221; &#8230; roots back to Shinto-ideas taking in ancient Vedic ideas possibly.<\/p>\n<p>Yama does not mean code of conduct, restraint or discipline in Japanese but just simply means &#8220;mountain&#8221;&#8230;and now I see a connection&#8230;<br \/>\nWhen you practice Pranayama, as you sit &#8220;mountain&#8221;-like, you get to that place where you are no longer blowing in the wind, unrooted &#8230; rather you are SOLID, SECURE, and GROUNDED.  Your head held high and proud &#8230; tranquility is felt.  There is utter&#8230; SERENITY.  Your prana is not disturbed or leaking but vibrant and well contained &#8211; locked in with your bandhas protecting your prana from escaping.  Prana, that light that you have within, that shines in the darkness.  Prana, that inner-heat, the glow that you have within that warms the heart.
